Biography

James Earl "Jimmy" Carter, Jr. (born October 1, 1924) served as the 39th President of the 
United States (1977–1981) and was the recipient of the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize, the only U.S.
 President to have received the Prize after leaving office. Before he became President, 
Carter served two terms as a Georgia State Senator and one as Governor of Georgia (1971–1975), 
and was a peanut farmer and naval officer.


Early life:
James Earl Carter, Jr., was born on October 1, 1924, in the tiny southwest Georgia city of
 Plains, near Americus. The first president born in a hospital, he is the eldest of four 
children of James Earl Carter and Bessie Lillian Gordy. Carter's father was a prominent 
business owner in the community and his mother was a registered nurse.

Marriage and family:
He married Rosalynn Smith in 1946. They have four children: John William "Jack" Carter 
(born 1947), James Earl "Chip" Carter III (born 1950), Donnel Jeffrey "Jeff" Carter, 
(born 1952) and Amy Lynn Carter (born 1967).

Grits, a 12-week old part Springer Spaniel, arrived at the Carter White House on Jan.
 24, 1977, just days after the new president was sworn in. The puppy was a gift to First
 Daughter Amy Carter from her teacher Verona Meeder, who also supplied an ample supply of 
food, a dog collar and a training book.

But sadly, Grits didn't last long at the White House. He was soon returned to Mrs. Meede
r for reasons unknown. Perhaps he didn't get along with the Carter's other dog, a 5-year
 old mixed breed, or maybe Amy's Siamese cat Misty Malarky Ying Yang wasn't so fond of the
 rambunctious 17-pound puppy.

Pets and Politics
Election Day pup: Grits, a 12-week old black and white puppy was born on the day Jimmy 
Carter won the presidency. 
Policy work: During his stay at the White House, Grits was involved in a PR campaign 
against Heartworm.
