The puppy was a gift to First Daughter Amy Carter from her teacher Verona Meeder, who also supplied an ample supply of food, a dog collar and a training book. But sadly, Grits didn't last long at the White House. He was soon returned to Mrs. Meede r for reasons unknown. Perhaps he didn't get along with the Carter's other dog, a 5-year old mixed breed, or maybe Amy's Siamese cat Misty Malarky Ying Yang wasn't so fond of the rambunctious 17-pound puppy.
